This qualification reflects the role of a skilled operator working in civil construction, who applies a broad range of skills in a varied work context, using some discretion and judgement and relevant theoretical knowledge.
The qualification applies to specialist occupations in Bituminous Surfacing Bridge Construction and Maintenance, Pipe Laying, Road Construction and Maintenance, Road Marking, Tunnel Construction, Timber Bridge Construction and Maintenance and Civil Construction general occupations. The individual may provide theoretical advice and support a team.

The following occupations relate to this qualification.
Bridge Constructor
Bridge Constructors build and repair a range of bridges, from steel to large poured concrete structures. Tasks may include site preparation, earthworks, constructing formwork for concrete bridges, and installing abutments, piers, decks and bridge handrails.
Leading Hand (Civil Construction)
Leading Hands are qualified operators or other civil works specialists who take on a more responsible role within a team with limited supervision of others. They may oversee the use of plant and materials and provide technical assistance to labourers.
Road Builder
Road Builders operate specialised plant and machinery to construct new roads and improve existing ones. Tasks may include operating small plant and machinery, installing drainage systems, spreading and compacting materials, repairing potholes and installing road barriers and signs.
Road Marker
Road Markers apply road markings, signs and lines on new and existing roads, airfield runways and car parks using specialised road marking plant and equipment.
Road Paver
Road Pavers use specialised machines to lay bituminous surfaces. They may operate machinery such as profile planers, rollers, asphalt pavers and slurry sealing machines to spread and compact asphalt, slurry and other materials.
Site Maintenance Construction Worker
Site Maintenance Construction Workers perform a range of construction support management duties including planning and controlling the site's fencing parameters, maintaining the water table, and controlling traffic and site risks.
                                       
Timber Bridge Constructor
Timber Bridge Constructors build and maintain wooden bridges. They may install temporary support members, install or replace sub-structure and super-structure members and splice and connect timber members.
                                       
Tunnel Constructor
Tunnel Constructors excavate underground, leaving a stable void to use for services such as rail, road, communications, water, sewerage, power and gas. They may operate specialised machinery such as road header machines and tunnel boring machines.
Utilities Industry Worker (Transmission Laying)
Utilities Industry Workers (Transmission Laying) construct and lay gas, water and wastewater pipelines for utilities networks. They may lay new networks, or rearrange existing pipeline systems. They use plant to excavate for underground utilities services.
